about shut up & write
Shut Up & Write!© (SUAW) is a vibrant, global community of writers who believe in the magic of writing together. Since 2007, we've helped people around the world build sustainable writing habits through simple, inclusive, community-powered events. From local cafés to online Zoom rooms, SUAW sessions provide a focused hour where writers of all backgrounds can finally "show up and write."
Gather
Show up. Say hi. Talk about your week. Share what you're hoping to get done. That's how strangers become regulars.
Write
Shut up. Write. For a set period of time, everyone writes in silence. No talking, no feedback. Just you and the page.
Repeat
When time is up, chat with the writers around you, stick around if you watnd, and come back next week.

About the monterey group
Welcome to our happy little band...
Here's the lowdown on our group
- We start at 5:30 with brief introductions and setting intentions on what we think we'll be working on (though what we actually work on may be different - we're not a strict rule group)
- Once introcductions are finished ( 5-10 minutes ) we start writing - it's "quiet time"...
- At 7:15 we re-gather and update each other on our intention. Did we write? Did we meet our goals?
- After the wrap up we invite you to stary and socialize, if you'd like.
- You DON'T have to stay for the entire 2 hour event. Everyone comes and goes as they need. No apologies or check-in/check-out needed
- YES! It's FREE.
OTHER
I'm happy to currently host the Monterey site for SUAW.
Novelists, Short-Story, Poet, Memoirist, Creative Non-Fiction - everyone is welcome. We've had artists drawing, students working on homework, others come out to journal, and some just to write letters.
